Verna Jo Vanderburgh

Verna Jo Vanderburgh passed away unexpectedly. We had to say goodbye and send her off to heaven Tuesday May 8th, 2018.

Verna was born February 21, 1931 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Vern and Elisha. She graduated from high school and attended Wesleyan Dakota College where she received a teaching degree.

She married Fritz Geike and together they owned a bakery in Chicago. They then sold it to move to the beautiful northwoods of Nisswa, MN. They purchased property and started Fritz's Resort and Campground. Verna is the founding director of the RSVP Volunteer Service Program and served on their board of directors for many years. She later worked for many years as an office manager at Dondelinger Chevrolet.

Verna was involved with and volunteered for many organizations over the years. She was a volunteer for the Arboretum, the Brainerd Public Library, Cinosam Club, RSVP, Foster Grandparents and the Senior Center. She played the organ for the Lutheran Church of the Cross every Sunday for years. Verna loved her rosemaling and faithfully painted every Wednesday. She was thrilled when someone wanted a piece of her work.

Verna was our anchor, our advisor and our cheerleader. She was an independent lady who loved the Lord and her church family who were all so good to her.

Verna is survived by her children, Gary (Lonne) Geike of Rochester, Richard (Jane) Geike of Nisswa and Lisa (Mark) Busch of Rochester 14 grandkids, 25 great grandkids and 2 great, great grandkids, brother Paul of Arizona and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Marion.

Celebration of Life for Verna is Saturday May 19th 1-3 pm at Church of Christ 15416 Dellwood Drive, Brainerd. Memorials are preferred to Church of Christ, the Northland Arboretum or the Library. Arrangements with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home.
